Symbiosis with Fire

Symbiosis with Fire uses scented candles as a medium to explore the complex relationship between humanity, fire, and nature. Inspired by large-scale wildfire disasters and Indigenous “cultural burning” practices, the work redefines fire—not simply as a force of destruction, but also as a catalyst for regeneration, memory, and emotional connection.
Through a series of material experiments, candles made from different materials burn with unique textures, aromas, and visual characteristics, evoking feelings of fragility, loss, and rebirth. An interconnected “candle landscape” uses wax-thread wicks as ignition points, allowing the flame to spread like a forest fire. As the fire progresses, viewers witness the transformation of solid forms into flowing wax, smoke, and scent—reflecting the complex emotions between destruction and healing.
From the ashes, a flower emerges, symbolising hope and the possibility of rebirth. This work invites the audience to not only observe fire, but to feel it—visually, emotionally, and spiritually. It becomes a ritualistic act, prompting reflection on how humans coexist with nature and how destruction may lead to restoration. In the end, Symbiosis with Fire is both a memorial and a meditation.
