Zhuā Zhōu again as an adult
We were taught from childhood to be a "good girl" and conform to societal expectations of womanhood, leaving little room for women to make truly autonomous choices. This phenomenon reminds me of the "Zhuā Zhōu" ritual, a traditional Chinese custom where parents guide children to select objects symbolizing future professions—a tangible representation of parental and societal expectations.
Through my project, I hope to empower women to make independent choices. By filling out the questionnaire, they can explore their inner selves, gain confidence, and then use stickers to build their ideal lifestyle on postcards. They’ll envision who they truly wish to become before mailing the postcard. I’ll document their reflections through these mailboxes and, five years later, mail the postcards back to the addresses provided. This will explore whether we unconsciously change ourselves under societal conditioning.
This project encourages women to become whoever they aspire to be—looking toward the future, free from constraints.
