Borrowed Sun
Exploring the manipulation of natural light, Borrowed Sun aims to foster a deeper emotional connection with spaces. Examining natural light’s profound impact on experience, characterised by a distinct physical and visible warmth. Its inherent inconsistency ensures that no two people will perceive the same moment. it is ever-changing and beautifully unstable. This work investigates how sunlight can be manipulated, redirected and preserved through analog methods.
Redirecting sunlight using mirrors into dark, unused mundane areas of the home produced moments of ephemerality that made the everyday suddenly extraordinary. The simple introduction of a natural light source reignited spaces with energy and life. Leading to a focus on transient phenomena; reflections, shadows and the emotional impact of their fleeting presence.
Borrowed Sun encourages the emotional and sensory exploration within design; a reconnection with nature, time and space. It is a call to embrace the changing, the impermanent and the beautiful instability of light. It also provides a valuable lesson in how we work with sunlight; to respond to it rather than control it, to celebrate its unpredictability as a vital element of spatial experience. In doing so, we open ourselves to moments of wonder, stillness and renewed attention.
