Brown Fabric
My project is a personal exploration of identity through textiles and home crafts. My hyper-awareness of being ‘not brown enough’ yet feeling ‘too brown’ for white spaces has led to an internal desire to quietly express my multicultural existence, done so by processes of knitting and crochet.
Using English yarn, I express the disconnect to my ethnicity through a series of artefacts that are contextual to my growing up feeling like an ‘other’. As stand-alone objects they appear unassuming but placed in the context of my family history they embody the distortion that British culture creates within the Desi diaspora.
